Carausius, Romano-British Emperor, 286-293. Antoninianus (Bronze, 21 mm, 4.88 g, 6 h), uncertain (irregular?) mint. IMP CARAVSIVS AV Radiate and draped bust of Carausius to right. Rev. PAX AVG Pax standing front, head to left, holding olive branch in her right hand and long scepter in her left. RIC 890. Webb 976. Beautiful dark green patina. Minor areas of weakness, otherwise, good very fine.



Little Orme's Head is the smaller of two headlands on the north coast of Wales, roughly midway between the island of Anglesey and the River Dee, west of Liverpool. In 1907, a hoard of coins from the time of Carausius was discovered on the headland, and this piece, with its beautiful green patina, is allegedly said to have originated from that find.
